No your eyes aren’t deceiving you, that’s a very pregnant Kitty on the cover there. How and why she got that way is a very important part of this arc. The other key factor is the school needs money. Two story lines run in the arc what’s happening at the school and what’s happening with Logan trying to fund the school. Neither are going smoothly. It all plays out in Wolverine and The X-Men issues 5 – 7.

First off the money problems at the school are something I love. Why? Because it’s a real world problem that adults have. Logan is now trying hard to be the adult, take responsibility for the children, and do the right thing. One of these is dealing with the money issue with letting the kids know it’s a worry. The hitch is Logan’s not quite got that last one down. He’s grabbed Quentin the Omega psychic mutant trouble making student to come with him to help count cards and see others hands at a space casino. (More damn aliens in my X-Men! I stuck fingers in my ears went LA-LA-LA and voila it was a rich mutant casino) Whoa there Logan this doesn’t sound like a good idea from the start! It’s not but it plays out with comedy and results that even Logan didn’t expect. In the end he’s getting more like Xavier every day!
The story is Kitty and her sudden pregnancy. Now she’s shocked, it’s been some time since she and Colossus split up. In the Schism she went with Logan agreeing with his philosophy. Colossus stayed with Scott agreeing with him. The couple regretted not coming to terms but with such differences they couldn’t continue. Hank is all understanding when she come into medical and excited about being Uncle Hank, except he finds out she’s not preggers she’s infected! She’s infected with brood (more damn aliens). As members of the staff shrink down to deal with that the school is under attack AGAIN! Except we learn that Kitty’s pregnancy was just a diversion from the real goal of the attackers.
I enjoyed this issue. It has Logan being his own headmaster. No Xavier wouldn’t have funded the school in this manner but it’s pure Logan and I loved it. The school coping with multiple crises at once reminded me of the old day and why I read X-Men all those years ago. To see a school of cool mutant kids led by cool mutant heroes try hard to just be a school. It wasn’t about setting a mutant agenda to rule the humans but rather just to be part of society and deal with threats to the peace of that blended society. Great story fun arc!
The interior art is fun and I enjoyed it. There were little things that irked me. Logan’s hat when at the Worthington Industries didn’t fit right – that bugged me. It’s clean, it’s clear, it’s straight forward. It’s not stylized and overly cluttered. I enjoy reading it and found it did support the story rather than detract from it. At times I feel it’s a bit cartoonish for what is rated as a more mature comic but only a tad. I found it highly enjoyable.
The covers are fun. Issue 6 is my favorite of course except for the aliens. NO ALIENS PLEASE! I thought the cover for issue 7 looked too busy and too tabloid or Vogue-ish. I mean the “X-Man MUST DIE!” and “LOST INSIDE KITTY PRYDE” headlines with the duo art brought that to my mind. Oh and even in an Pym-particle suit Bobby is iced up… WHY?!?
Next is a stand alone issue entitled A Little Impossible. This is the last issue before the Avengers Versus X-Men craptastic over arching Marvel Universe wide story comes marching in to disrupt everything. I’ll rant more on that later but I think you get the gist of where I’ll be heading.
There be spoilery bits after the jump! It’s all comments and laughs on a few specific panels and pages.
Leaving Worthington Industries after learning the school will not be funded by the company for taking care of Warren, Bobby and Logan talk about finances. You know I like that. I like that here are the X-Men being real grown-ups with grown-up problems. Here though I wondered if Toad washed Logan’s hat. Why doesn’t it fit? One thing about Logan is he’s a sharp suit dresser when he puts his mind to it. He comes from a time when men did that, when men wore hats to be business, dressed, and working. Why doesn’t his hat fit? It has before be it a cap or cowboy or fedora like this – they fit. He always set the head wear correctly not back on the crown like a bus drive. but forward over the head like a military man. I know I’ve got hat issues to go with my teeth issues. But look I’ve dealt with hats all my married life, my husband wears them for the Navy I know what is right and what is wrong. This is wrong. Besides a man is a well worn correctly fitting chapeau is sexy. Am I right ladies and gents? I’m right.
Here Quentin and Logan arrive at the casino. Logan finally explains what they are going to do. He even pushes Quentin’s buttons to gear him up for it. I’d say it’s kinda like a pep talk to the troops but more in a challenge, pissing contest, sort of way. I liked it even if I don’t agree with what he’s doing here to get funding.
Oh and I enjoyed the idea that Logan’s brain smells like beer farts. I dunno after all the hell issue fighting demons, Dr. Rot monkeying around, and such I just find it funny.
Needless to say Quentin being himself he doesn’t quite stick to the plan and starts over doing it. He gambles himself, draws attention to himself and generally doesn’t get the idea of just getting what we need and leaving. So Logan has to call for a quick retreat seeing that all their winning is starting to cause a stir. He find Quentin talking up two ladies. He takes his charge by the ear and leads him out.
I laughed at the line about not knowing what to do with the two women. LOL! Oh that’s a jab at Quentin after the elderly aunt remark. I do enjoy how they banter and jab at each other but when push comes to shove in the story they both look out for the other. We all know Logan would know full well how to entertain the ladies. Oh he’s reformed his ways right? Being headmaster and all now.
Meanwhile back at the school the brood infected Kitty Pryde, headmistress of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning (JGSHL) is running for life and trying to protect the kids from the unknown invaders. Broo didn’t make it into his lock down area. She’s trying to protect him too. Just who are the invaders and what do they want?
Also this is Bobby’s area as you can see with all the ice. Look at the columns, just look at them… really Bobby do we need women almost nip-slipping holding up the roof of the MATH and ACCOUNTING department? This is a school for CHILDREN. I know you and Logan probably enjoyed the images but is it necessary?
It’s a long story on how the X-Men wound up fighting the brood in Kitty by being minaturized. Let’s just say it all started because of Kid Gladiator and let you read the rest for yourself. However the line that Beast is going to “blow up Kitty’s uterus” gave me a bad case of the giggles. I know, I know but really when do think that could be a dramatic action film line and not have *ahem* overtones? Then I wondered if this will leave Kitty infertile. Dunno. That would be a bad side effect. I’m thinking Hanks amore at SWORD cures all the side effects of the infection. I like to think that. I like Kitty. I want her to have a family some day. Like Luke and Jessica Cage do in the Avengers.
The BAMFS are more than just comic relief. Though I do love them going after Logan’s stuff and his whiskey. Here they team together to take the invader down and save Kitty. Also note, the preeminent astrobiologist that attacked the school, infected Kitty as a distraction to get to Broo says they aren’t Bamfs. We don’t get to learn what they are before the drop him onto a prepared Krakatoa Jr. (Living island like mutant, very big, very powerful) that takes the bad guy into hand for the SWORD authorities. BAMFS are heroes! Just like the Kurt Wagner that they look like. Now that things are in hand at the school let’s check in at the casino shall we?
Logan and Quentin have to fight their way out of the casino and are on the run back to their spaceship. Except in my mind it’s a plane, a plane to take from the rich mutant patronized casino. LA-LA-LA (okay I go no answer for the Kitty thing except infection and attack by bad mutant). Any way this panel where Logan sees the error of his ways in this plan AND realizes what a pain in the ass he had to be to Xavier at times is funny. It’s a growing moment for the current Headmaster. He and Quentin get away with some money, enough I guess though back at the school another answer to financial problems is found (one I don’t like because it gets rid of ALL financial problems and I enjoyed this issue way too much to see it solved). However there’s another problem, this one is with Logan. Something he’s never had before. I’ll leave it there knowing the next issue will disclose all. BUT I highly encourage you read this arc. It’s most enjoyable hi-jinxs center on a school for mutant teenagers, what can go wrong?
Until next time! Don’t forget to rate these posts (thumbs up or down as you see fit), leave comments, and share them with your friends. The more that chime in the more fun we comic geeks can have. LATER!
