We all know this movie. If you don’t please get thee to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Google Play, iTunes, or wherever you get your movies now that Blockbuster is busted and see it. It is fabulous and for my money one of the best comedies ever. I’ve seen it more times than Phil in the movie re-lived February 2nd. Every time I belly laugh. It’s a rare thing to have a movie like that. So here’s to the books, poems, paintings, photos, movies, tv shows that always bring us joy. I’m going to share just a few of mine. One that like Phil and February 2nd I repeat again and again.
Oh c’mon who doesn’t giggle at the chocolate factory one? As kid I laughed because YAY! all the chocolate you can eat. As an adult I laugh because it’s the truth the better worker you are the more gets thrown at you and because you are a better worker, the more you try to do… It’s so true it’s funny. The things she gets into well are still hilarious. Oh and don’t forget we have a Lucy tree topper that is still our tradition, even though was supposed to be an angel. Yes when I watch I laugh.
No this isn’t like the Steve Martin movie which didn’t do the book justice. Modernized it and for me drained the joy right out of it. The sweetness of this book is the cutting edge family at the turn of the last century. Mom works! Not only that Mom and Dad are on cutting edge of science! But yet they maintain a traditional loving family that runs into the usual problems of having 12 kids. It’s all sweetness and joy even when sadness happens. It’s not just kids running amuck or Mom’s gone Dad’s a doofus like the movie. But a family learning to work with its strengths and manage its weaknesses in a world that’s always changing. It’ll make me smile every time.
There you have it. Three of my always do over list, a movie, a tv show, and a book. For a person who isn’t into comedy I can name three that will always get me. To me comedy isn’t being silly. It isn’t laughing at others being silly. It’s relating to what is happening and laughing at the commonality of it all. We all have wanted to do a day over, but over and over until we get it right? We all want to try things and at times get ourselves in a position of what do I do now and how did I get HERE? We all struggled to grow up in world that wasn’t the same as our parents, yet some how the experiences are universal across the generations. For me the thing that makes me laugh is a shared laugh at life and humanity and how much we change we stay the same.
