Monday Marginala – We’ve Got Bees

When it is hot weather bees don't always go into the hive at night. They 'beard' the hive to keep cool. Think of it as sitting on the front porch on a hot evening. Here's our hive 2 one evening after 100+F day.

It all started when one of Mike’s Wisconsin coworkers would talk about his 10,000 pets. He had a bee hive for his farm. Since then Mike has wanted a hive. Moving here to Tennessee we finally got enough space to have one. Continue reading

Monday Marginalia – Harley Motorcycles

20170703_110403

When we moved to Wisconsin Harley was having their big 100th anniversary celebration. It was only fitting that we made sure we saw their museum close to our leaving. So on our July visit back to see the kids we went to the Harley Museum with Aaron. We bookended out time in Wisconsin with a Milwaukee grown world wide business – Harley Davidson.

Monday Marginalia – And To Space! Indoors At Least.

20170320_162251

The family in Huntsville, AL Space Center. Aaron, Sara, and Mike. Don’t know who the ones on each end are they closed their visors.

So when the kids were here we gave them the choice one day go to the Shiloh battlefield or to Huntsville Space Center. Well they chose the space center. Aaron had been there when he was in elementary.  Sara had never been there.  So to Huntsville we went.

Monday Marginalia – The Safe That Killed Jack Daniel

20170322_150340

Before we went to visit the kids they came down and visited us. One of the things we did with them was drive over to Lynchburg to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery.  We took the flight tour so we got samples at the end.   The odd thing about it is Moore County where the Distillery is…  is a dry county.  Yep, except for the distillery property you can’t buy Jack in the county where it is made. Still if you’ve had Jack Daniels any where in the world it came from this one place in a dry county in the town of Lynchburg, Tennessee. Continue reading

Monday Marginala – We Visited The Kids

Here we are on the road and wondering if the little dark cloud up there near the Batman building in Nashville is following over someone.

Here we are on the road and wondering if the little dark cloud up there near the Batman building in Nashville is following over someone.

Well hello there!  I know, I know blog fade got me as RL intruded.  But yet again I’m back just like a bad penny.  So shall we carry on as if nothing happened.  Yes why don’t we…

Over the 4th of July weekend we went to North Chicago and stayed in the Navy Lodge at the Great Lakes Naval Base to visit our son Aaron and his fiancee Sara.  Aaron home at their apartment in Kenosha after a lay off at the civilian job and then injury during his Army National Guard drill weekend.  So he was free to hang with us and Sara was free Sunday for a tour and Monday for dinner. Monday Marginalia – Found Photo

Found photo

Again a long lapse and I apologize. Stomach flu followed by a gut infection (no more need be said) knocked me down low. Just as I recovered it was time for the book sale at the local library. I worked that and have volunteered to help sell vintage books and leisure reading lots of used books for them on E-Bay. I will let you know when it goes active and encourage you to help our tiny library grow while getting good deals on reading materials and vintage books.

So while doing research on vintage books to get a price, this photo fell from the pages of one of them. If you look on the right the man there is wearing shorts too big for him and has a definite tan line there . Don’t worry though his trucks are drying in the foreground. Looking at it we guessed it to be a Navy swim call about WWII.

Finding it made me smile so I share a happy moment during a war.

Monday Marginalia – Mattie’s Spurned Beau

Remember the interesting postcard from a spurned admirer?  The one to Mattie Longmire?  Well I found a follow up one that seems by the writing to be from the same admirer.  This one is from June 1908 in Lu___, Tennessee.  I couldn’t read the month on the other so I can’t tell you which comes first.  Again it’s hard to read the writer’s message, partly due to age, partly due to penmanship, partly due to cramming so much in there.  This one gets very creepy in a crazy stalker kind of way.  I’m not sure if that’s my modern woman mind alarms.  I’m thinking this after the ship card because he seems to say it was the 28th.  I’ll do my best.  So shall we continue the story of Mattie and her suitor?  As always if you can improve on my attempt at transcribing please let me know.  The comments are open below.

My Dear Little Girl Mattie,
How are you by this time I am sorry you have to _____ for wash. If I had my say I wouldn’t let you do anything. I thought I would send you a lot of doges this time to match all the cats. (in pencil) Ha Ha (end pencil) I believe you said you thought more of dogs than you did cats. So you know I _______ to ___________. ____________ You live best I have been fl____ today been(?) hot and mad at the old nite (?) Flys they have been something my sister and I all with. They were dead. I have killed sveral of them today. (in pencil) by by you (end pencil)
Well the lost letter came today to OGR I this to be a fool for I not the rich(?) man as he go__ ____ and was ___ not the 28th

So why write to a gal about killing flies then go back and write in by by you? Same for the ha ha after the comment about the dogs on the front. It seems Mattie wrote a letter back. It appears she claimed it was a misunderstanding about dates. However our writer seems to think it’s the money the other many has. Oh and he had his dates right…. and is a good fly killer.
